Agt., Ra'eigh, N. O Address Waste in Lumbering Southern Appalachian Forests. The forests of the Southern Appalachian Mountains have oeen cut so eagerly for the valu able hardwoods they contain that very little virgin timber is left and about 85 per cent of the area is second growth. The drain o1 these forests by many industries is immense. The lumberman are going over the and for the third time. First ".hey took only the prime oak and ooplar saw timber. Next they oook the oaks that were suited ior barrel staves. Now they are ifter whatever merchants bh nrees areleft, such as birch, chest nut, and gum. Moreover, these forests hive :een, and still .are, logged vory -vasteflly. Nearly three-quarters )f the timber cut for ties is wast ed. Double V,r even treble the aumber of ties now cuf coalu readily be secured from thes&me irea without injury to the forost. 3y simply taking all the suitable .rees, 125 ties could be cut trow in acre whidh now yields' caly 30, and if all the wood in the ti eetv were fully utilized 170 additional ies per acre could be secured. With mine timbers the story is the same. Fully 40 per cent oi the timber handled in procuring rhem is entirely was wasted. Finally, fires are injuring the productiveness of the App Ja 2hian forests by running ever he ground and killing younj, growth. Circular 118, just published by the Forest Service, discusses the whole question of managing to better advantage the second growth forests of the Appalachian region. This publication can be obtained of the Forester at "Washington. A Strange Story. Mrs. Isaac W. Austill, of Chest nut Ridge, N. C, tells a strange story of great suffering: '"I was in baP condition for months, but got no relief. My periods had stopped, all but the pain. C, has invented and patented a cotton picking machine which gives encouraging promise of do ing the work for which it is de signed. The whole apparatus is to be carried on a specially de signed four-wheel truck and drawn by horse power along the cotton rows. The priori pie on which the machine works is some thing like that of the familiar sue-; on Cue at the modern ginneries. A gasoline engine on the forward part cf the truck furnishes the power to run a pair of twii, fans that do the suction work, while connectian with the fans are four or more flexible tubes, or hose that may be guided along the rows of open cotton by unskilled tabor. Fear Jack London is Lost in the Pacific. The editors of .Woman's Home Companion, for whom Jack Lon don is sailing around the wor'd in his little boat Snarit, state that ho is now over a tmonth due at at Tahiti of the Society Islands, for which place he sailed from Hilo, Hawaii, on October 27 th. The gas engine with which the Snark is equipped was not work ing well when Mr. L.omum left Hawaii, and it is suppoc-e by his publishers that he has exp erienc ed some more trouble with it, or that he has encountered the dol drums of the Pacific, by which thelittle forty-five-i'ootboat might D3 buffeted about for tir.ys or weeks, to be dropped at length into a sea dead calm. For such are the equatorial doldrvms. London sailed from Sau Fran cisco on May 4th. ched Hawaii about a month later, lie it accompanied on his voyage around the world by his a ire, -a captain, an engineer, one sailor aad two Japanese servants. Lon don expects to spend sever, years on his voyage und to wau com pletely around the world, stop ping at interesting places wher ever he goes. No Time tor fireworks. The mountainous waves threat ened to engulf the struggling ship at any moment. Tiie cap tain ordered a box of sky-rockets and flares brought to the rail, and with his own hands jgnited t;iem, in the hope that they would make known his distresf to some passing ship. Amid the rocket's red glare a tall, thin, au&lere indiviau&i made his way to the rail and reproved the captain as follows: "Captain, I must protest against this unseemmgly bravado.
